I say Tsarist, for nostalgic reasons I suppose. I suppose I'm a bit partial to the image of a strong, semi-authoritarian and powerful yet relatively conservative Russia, much like the empire that existed after the liberation of the serfs but prior to the revolution. I like this Russia because it is a very influential country yet retains a mystique; it is not totally open to the outside and its society is somewhat exotic to western Europeans. At the same time, it is familiar in other ways (such as its excellence in fine arts and architecture) and is not nearly as closed and frightening as it was under Lenin and Stalin. In my opinion, this Russia stands out not as just another European empire, not as a backwards totalitarian society of czars and serfs not as the arch-enemy of Western capitalism and not as an ailing superpower but as a category all its own: the proud Russian Empire.
